Structures, Strategies and Compositions Lesson 9 Speed – Width – Variation - Creativity
2
Today we will... Complete two past paper questions 1.Choose two elements from the list below: Space, Speed, Variation, Motifs, Creativity, Design form, Width/Depth/Mobility (i) Explain how each was a strength in your structure, strategy or composition. (4) (ii) Choose two different elements. Explain how these were a weakness in your structure, strategy or composition. (4) 2.Describe how you planned your practice of your chosen SSC to overcome your identified weaknesses.(6)

Question 1
4
Structure to answer Strength 1 / Weakness 1 Why element chosen is important Impact on your performance – supported by examples Strength 2 / Weakness 2 Why element chosen is important Impact on your performance – supported by examples
5
Instructions You have 6 minutes to plan your answer No talking – working on own for first 2 minutes 2 minutes for seeking clarification from partner No talking – complete your plan You will then have 20 minutes to answer the question If at any point you are stuck you will be allowed to refer to memory map on wall

Memory Maps Speed – Width – Variation - Creativity
7
Why variation is important Variation is a vital element of the Fast break. Having a variety of options available to our point guard maximises chance of scoring an unopposed lay-up. If the defence read our play and get back and set up the point guard is able to use a different option. By having a variety of options available we can vary our attack, this will prevent it becoming predictable. By being less predictable the defence are forced to make split second decisions Pressurising the defences in this way causes confusion and indecision
8
Why creativity is important Creativity is a vital element of our play its required during Fastbreak and Set Plays Creativity ensures we have a variety of options available to our point guard maximises chance of scoring Provides options during the fastbreak, by having a variety of options available we can vary our attack, this will prevent it becoming predictable. Within our set play we require creativity to create space We use a mixture of V-Cuts, J-Cuts, Off the ball and On the ball screens to create space Creativity within our set play ensures we create space for a scoring opportunity By being creative we force the defence to make split second decisions Pressurising the defences in this way causes confusion and indecision
9
Why speed is important Speed is a vital element of the Fastbreak Moving up the court quickly maximises the opportunity of numerical superiority. Enables you to reach the opposition key before they are able to set up a defence Forces the opposition to make quick decisions as to who to mark Less pressure on skill level / decision making as less defenders If there are few or no defenders this gives an excellent opportunity to shoot and score an unopposed lay-up. Creating the opportunity for a lay-up is advantageous as it is taken close to the basket and therefore has a high success rate.
10
Why Width is important Width is created during the fast break by the Centre and Forward filling the wide lanes either side of the Point Guard. Filling all three lanes gives defenders more space to cover by pulling them away from the middle of the court and away from the key The space created can now be used by the PG to dibble up court at speed The space in the key can be used by the C or F who can receive a pass and drive in to score an unopposed lay-up as they cut in from the left or right lane.. Filling all three lanes gives the PG more passing options, which makes the attack less predictable

Question 2

2.Describe how you planned your practice of your chosen SSC to overcome your identified weaknesses. 2 ½ x 6marks = 15 minutes Structure Introduction Description of 3 main practices (include the following) Activity Focus - Progressions/Adaptations Success Criteria Description of the progressive practices should include Three main description must include explanation as to why filling all three lanes was so important Explanation of how the variations allowed you to score from each lane, why it was important to adapt your strategy Discuss how unopposed practices helped improve ability to work at speed Discuss how each step allowed you to practice the movements and became progressively more demanding on your decision making skills and your skills within Basketball as they became more game like
