1
Mavericks Div 1 Formations A look at our 4-3-3 and a couple of other situation specific formations
2
Standard Set up 4-3-3 Outside Defense Centre Defense Centre Midfield Forward Centre Defense Outside Defense Centre Midfield Forward
3
Roles and Responsibilities Each slide will have a specific group defined Each group will have specific offensive and defensive roles and responsibilities Some generic attacking and defending rules will be presented
4
Definitions On Attack – Any time we possess the ball, no matter where we are on the field or which direction we are heading. If we have the ball we are attacking. In Defense – Any time the other team has possession of the ball. If the opponent has the ball, we are defending.
5
Generic Defending In it’s simplest form, defending is limiting/reducing 2 things: Time Space We want to apply pressure, provide cover and maintain balance. This will make the opponent predictable and maintain our structure. Talk, Talk, Talk, Talk, Talk
6
Generic Attacking In it’s simplest form, attacking is taking advantage of 2 things: Time Space We want to dictate the pace of play and unsettle defensive structure. We want to maintain control of the ball at all times, the best form of defense is to ensure the other team never gets the ball. Talk, Talk, Talk, Talk, Talk
7
Outside Defense in Defense Outside defenders are the 3 rd and 4 th defenders Restrict attackers from coming into the centre of the field Generally pick up the outside attackers (usually midfielders in a 4-4-2), apply pressure to the ball when it is wide on the field
8
Outside Defense in Attack Responsible to press up the wings, act like outside midfielders The player on the ball side of the field should press as much as possible (all the way to the end line) to support the attack The player on the off ball side should support to the 18 yard box If the ball switches the defenders switch roles, the deep defender cycles back to the corner of the 18
9
Centre Defense in Defense Strong spine to our defensive strategy Man mark the opposing forwards (in the case of 2 forwards) Look to slow the opponents attack, especially counter attacks Become more aggressive as we move towards our goal Control the defense at all times
10
Centre Defense on Attack Limited offensive role on counter attacks, really just get the play started Serve as support to midfielders and outside defenders Spread the field On a sustained attack, with control, a centre defender can sneak into the attack, but at least one must always hang back
11
Centre Mid in Defense Primary role is to force the play to be predictable, create turnovers (create counter attack for us) and slow any counter attacks by the opponent Apply pressure to the ball in all central areas of the field
12
Centre Mid on Attack Determine the pace of play, counter attack or build up Provide support for forwards and defense joining the attack Create offense through pass selection and movement Get into the “hole” behind the forwards and score goals
13
Forwards in Defense Apply pressure to the ball in the attacking half of the field Force turnovers, make the play predictable Work hard to win the ball back
14
Forwards on Attack Create space for each other Use movement and passing to open up the opponent defense Utilize the midfielders and outside defenders supporting the attack Shoot to score
15
Defensive set up 5-4-1 Outside Defense Centre Defense Centre Midfield Forward Centre Defense Outside Defense Centre Midfield Forward
16
Why would we use a 5-4-1 This formation would be used in a tight game where we need to hold onto a slim lead or hold onto a draw to get a result. It is very defensively oriented, almost no focus on defending, simply control the other team and keep the out of danger areas.
17
All Out Attack Set up 3-3-4 Outside Defense Centre Defense Centre Midfield Forward Centre Defense Outside Defense Centre Midfield Forward
18
Why would we use a 3-3-4 In rare situations where we need to push for a tie or we need a goal to get the 3 points. This is an all out attack, we will be open to counter attacks.
