Zimbabwe Food Crisis Prolonged drought, political instability and agricultural mismanagement has left more than 5 million Zimbabweans in need for food aid.

The situation is set to deteriorate further by the end of this year. The UN estimates that by December 2009, 7 million Zimbabweans will need to rely on food aid.

UnitingWorld’s Food Relief Appeal. UnitingWorld provided funds to supply around 800 hungry families with emergency food packs. Each family received enough food for 1-2 weeks, clothing and soap.

Sophia was one of the recipients. She is an elderly lady living in Buhera. HIV/AIDS and poverty have left her without family. Despite her age she must support herself.

Knowing the importance of food in a time of scarcity she bent to collect the few grains of corn that had fallen to the ground. There are many other people like Sophia in need of food aid.

UnitingWorld is now seeking to supply a further 1,700 families in the Buhera region with emergency food packs.
