1 The Master Teacher--Summary The Role of the Teacher is to join the Holy Spirit in guiding, instructing, and shepherding God’s people toward obedient living in Christ. It is not enough for the teacher to dispense truth, he/she must model, hold fast to, and warn in relation to it. A teacher cannot just be a giver of information, but rather a catalyst for life-change.

2 The Goal of our teaching  The rock-solid teacher, Jesus, is our example!  We trust Him for our salvation.  We trust Him for our spiritual growth.  Now, let’s trust Him for our ministry!  We want to “Teach like Jesus”.

3 Definition of Teaching One hand on the student...Have a grasp of the needs of our students – John 2:24 the other on the Word of God...Want tograsp the meaning of the Scriptures – John 1:1 bringing them together for life change. The real skill and art of teaching is leading our students to life change! – Col 1: 27b-29

4 Which Orientation Are You?  Student Orientation? Asks, “Who am I teaching?”  Subject Orientation? Asks, “What am I teaching?”  Style Orientation? Asks, “How am I teaching?”

5 Teaching approaches  To be master teachers, we must develop all three orientations: by observing what Jesus did by establishing wise principles of teaching by putting the principles into practice  This follows an effective pattern for teaching that is outlined in Scripture: From the passage; To the principle Toward the practice

6 By observing what Jesus did…  Proclaiming truth: capture interest and relate to the problems, and needs of students  Instructing in truth: show how the Bible is relevant to students’ experiences  Healing with truth: lead students to appropriate the Word as the answer to their personal needs. (Professor Roy Zuck)

7 A New Perspective on Teaching!  Mark 1:22  John 7:46  Matthew 7:28, 29

8 Jesus Taught with AUTHORITY! By establishing wise principles of teaching.. Jesus proclaimed with authority, got the attention and people listened to Him in amazement!

9 Sources of Authority RESPONSE! PositionPerceptionKnowledge Attention & Amazement Tradition

10 How Do you teach with authority?  God’s Call for life change. –Preach Good News. –Teach for Obedience. –Heal Broken Lives.  My Obedience. –Pray for opportunities to share the Gospel. –Believe as we place our full confidence in what Scriptures say. –Heart as we are passionate and model enthusiasm for obeying the Scriptures.

11 Jesus Taught with CREATIVITY! By establishing wise principles of teaching.. Jesus taught very effectively with the goal of influencing people.

12 Observations of Jesus’ lectures:  Jesus ’ lectures were short.  Jesus spent time with His disciples—Preview. Mark 3:14  Jesus allowed de-briefing time—Review. Matthew 16:13  Jesus prompted time to think—Reflection. Mark 6:31

13 Jesus Taught with CREATIVITY! By establishing wise principles of teaching.. Jesus taught very effectively with meaningfulness.

14 Teaching Principles 1. Primacy & Recency—Rev. 1:8,11; 22:13,14 2. Chunking—“Sermon on the Mount” 3. Meaningfulness—John 16:13-14

15 Definitions  A – Awareness: Motivation to trust and develop commitment  T – Truth: Right (or righteous) reality – the foundation and standard of life (John 17:17)  E – Experience: Living out what you believe is right Rock-Solid Teacher Chapter 5 - 9

16 Creative Lecturing  GESTURES –Small audience in small room –Medium audience –Large audience in large room  VOICE –Pitch –Volume –Speed

17 Lecture and the other methods! PresentationInteraction Self-Feeding Disciple of Jesus “Received the word” “Searched the Scriptures daily” “Those things were so (true)” From Acts 17:11

18 Telling a Story  Three things to remember when telling a story: 1. Tell a story with purpose 2. Use the six journalistic questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? 3. Land the meaning Jesus told stories to prompt listeners to obey.

19 The Good Samaritan “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” (Luke 10:36, NIV)

20 The source of Jesus ’ illustrations Personal example History Bible story Creativity Our sources of stories Jesus’ sources of stories 1. Have something to say!

21 The opening (first 10 seconds) of Jesus ’ stories established the setting. 1. Who? 2. What? 3. When? 4. Where? 5. Why? 6. How? 2. Catch their attention

22 Main body He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. This is why I speak to them in parables: "Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.” (Matthew 13:11-13, NIV) 3. Develop the meaning

23 The final sentences of Jesus ’ parables prompted a response:  He usually didn ’ t have to state the main point, because it was obvious from the story.  He usually established the analogy in the first sentence. For example, The kingdom of heaven is like... (Matthew 13:31).  He often ended His stories with a convincing question: How is He then his Son? ” (Luke 20:44b, KJV). 4. Apply for life change

24 Teach using questions  Questions clarify and challenge our thinking  Questions help us place attitudes in proper priority  Questions guide actions toward the proper outcome  Questions prompt us to obey  Questions establish Scripture as the reference point

25 Using Questions  For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? (Luke 9:25, KJV)  “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that.” (Luke 6:32-33, NIV)

26 Using Questions And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?” (Luke 10:26, NASB)

27 Principles of Asking Questions  “Have you not read?” – Jesus rarely asked knowledge questions such as Who, Where, When? but he often asked probing questions such as Why or How?  Pauses are effective  Versatility: start or end with a question  Encourage to ask questions.  Rarely use “yes” or “no” questions.

28 Matthew 9:36 “When Jesus saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd”.

29 What motivates students?  Students are curious.  Students are “depraved.”  Students are loved.  Students have physical needs.  They need new opportunities.  They need discipline.  They need God’s shepherding.  They need safety and providence.

30 What motivates students?  Students can think rationally and critically.  Students have social needs.  Students can respond and change.  They need challenges to think and discern.  They need to make and develop relationships.  They need faith and growth in Christ.

31 What do we learn about Jesus’ motivation from Revelation 2-3? 1. He knew their situation. 2. He started with the positive first, and built on strengths. 3. He took action steps to manage their weak areas. 4. He provided encouragement and feedback.

32 Types of Encouragement: a.Exhort: 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 b.Resource: Philippians 4:10-19; Hebrews 4:15-16 c.Reassurance: 1 John 3:19-22; Titus 3:5-7 d.Reward: Colossians 3:23-24; 1 Cor. 3:8-14

33 Choose a motivator to use! ABCs

34 Where did Jesus teach? From Mark chapters 1-8, what do you find?  In the wilderness  In the synagogue  In the grain fields  On the mountain  In a marketplace  In a house away from the crowds

35 John 17 God the Son... praying to God the Father... by the power of the Holy Spirit! For what does Jesus pray?

36 What is your take-away? Start doing? Stop doing? Continue doing?
