1 What is GIS supposed to do? (GIS demos)GIS demos Query – asks questions about the data in a GIS in a specified area –Where are all the roads in administrative area? –Where are all the towns in the county? Buffer – creates an area of a specified distance from a point, line, or polygon –How many towns fall within a floodplain? –How many hotels are located within one mile of the baseball stadium? Overlay – the ability to stack thematic layers on top of each other –Soil types, Land use, population –Determine population density in relation to disease-causing vectors and habitats

2 What is GIS supposed to do? Proximity – how close an object or an area of interest is to certain features Connectivity – determines shortest route to a clinic Modeling – tool for analyzing processes and trends In summary, critical thinking skills

5 Some examples from “Geographical inquiry: connecting place and time and critical thinking” “Geographical inquiry: connecting place and time and critical thinking Local history research performed in Raleigh, NC that embraced the study of the larger theme of African-American history through the exploration of changes witnessed in a local school and its community (see “Oral History, GIS, and the Web: Putting African American History on the Map”, GIS in the Classroom, Marsha Alibrandi, 2003). Analysis of town history and geography by students at Jenifer Junior High School in Lewiston, ID as part of the Lewis & Clark Rediscovery Project and local community research involving history and geography (http://www.lewiston.k12.id.us/staff/sbranting/lc1/G&H.htm).http://www.lewiston.k12.id.us/staff/sbranting/lc1/G&H.htm The presence of place-based education in communities of all sizes. o The Rural School and Community Trust features it largely at its Web site (www.ruraledu.org, select “Topics,” select “Place-Based Learning”). o For the City of Phoenix the approach is a marriage of service learning with GIS in its AuThenTiCITY: Youth Mapping Community Solutions program (http://phoenix.gov/NRG/index.html, deborah.dillon@phoenix.gov).

6 In Conclusion GIS can take many forms in the classroom –Web-based GIS –Career and Technology classes –Geography and Science classes –Community Mapping Depends upon your and your students’ needs Get other teachers on board by sharing your lesson or ideas for using GIS
