Meraki Solution with Demo July 16th, 2013

Overview Who is Meraki? What’s so great about Meraki? Wait, “cloud-controller”? I don’t know about that. How does this affect me? What do they have that I would be interested in? OK, fine, let’s see a demo.

Who is Meraki Meraki started in 2009 with their cloud- controller wireless LAN series. They added the MX security line and the System Manager Mobile Device Manager in 2010. And then added the MS switch line in 2012 Cisco purchased Meraki in November of 2012.

What’s so great about Meraki? Centralized management via a cloud based controller. Reduced IT staff involvement in wireless deployment and maintenance. Motel 6 employs one part time person who works from home and maintains over 6000 APs. Many standard features that are “premium” features with other vendors.

So what is this “cloud-controller”? Upside: There is no “on site” controller but the devices are centrally managed. No controller cost but all the advantages of having one. Each device uses very little bandwidth. The APs can still work even if the internet is down. Meraki has 5 redundant data centers.

So what is the catch? The catch (not really a downside): Each device must be licensed in order to operate. 1, 3, and 5 year available (and 10 year in some circumstances). BUT, this fee also includes 24x7x4 support and 8x5xNBD replacement. The device itself is useless without the license.

How does this affect me? Do you have staff dedicated to wireless? Knowledge of deploying a wireless network and troubleshooting wireless issues. Can you justify the cost of an on site controller based solution? The controller alone can be another $4k to $6k just to get started. And, to get all the bells and whistles, you will need even more equipment. Do you need a deeper insight to what is happening with your wireless clients?

What do they have that I would be interested in? MR Series Access points: MR12, MR16, and MR24 Indoor APs MX Series Security devices. MS Series Switches. System Manager Mobile Device Manager. FREE …as in beer!
