Introduction The Mid-Atlantic States are U.S. states on mid Atlantic coast: the states midway along the Atlantic coast of the United States, consisting of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.

New York ► New York is known as the "Empire State." ► New York City was named in honor of the brother of England's King Charles II, the Duke of York and Albany. Albany is the capital of New York State. ► New York is the center of banking, finance and communication in the United States.

What to see in New York ► New York City is home to Broadway, the entertainment center of the United States. ► New York is home to the Statue of Liberty, an enduring symbol of our nation’s foundation on the principles of liberty and justice. ► New York City, with a population of more than seven million people, is the largest city in the United States and the fourth largest city in the world.

New Jersey ► Known as the Garden State. New Jersey was named after the island of Jersey in the English Channel. ► The first to ratify the Bill of Rights in 1789.

What to see in New Jersey ► It is one of the great coastal playgrounds of the United States. ► Atlantic City is one of the most well-known resorts. ► Many historic sites of interest including Thomas Edison’s workshop and Revolutionary War battle sites.

Pennsylvania ► William Penn, a Quaker, named Pennsylvania by combining the name Penn and the Latin term sylvania, which translates as "woodlands”. The Mason and Dixon line ► Marks the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland. It was drawn in the 1760’s to settle a dispute between the Penn and Calvert families. ► As the line was partly the boundary between the free and the slave states, it has come to signify the division between the North and the South. the North and the South.

Maryland ► Chesapeake Bay cuts into Maryland, providing the state. with several harbors ► Annapolis is the home of the United States Naval Academy. ► Francis Scott Key was born in Maryland, he wrote our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.

Things to do in Maryland ► One of Maryland's famous annual events is the Preakness Stakes, a horse race run each May. ► Fort McHenry, a Revolutionary War Fort, and Antietam, a Civil War battlefield, are both in Maryland. ► Baltimore is home to several museums and an aquarium.

Delaware ► The first of the original 13 states of the Union. ► The first state to approve the US constitution. ► Delaware is also known as the diamond state.

Things to do in Delaware ► Delaware's many lakes, its ocean beaches and its rivers provide excellent swimming, boating and fishing. ► The Fenwick Island Lighthouse, which began operation August 1, 1859.

Washington D.C. ► Is not a state, but a large city designed at the end of the 17 th century to house the capital of our country. ► Washington hired French artist-architect Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant to plan the physical layout of the city. ► L'Enfant selected two high spots - Jenkins Hill for the "Congress House" and a second hill a mile and a half away for the "President's Palace“ which would become known as the White House.

Assignment ► You and your family will be vacationing in the Mid-Atlantic states. ► Choose two adjoining states to visit and write an essay describing your trip. ► Your essay should include the following: ► How you will get there? ► Which states you will visit? ► What you will see in each state? ► Will you cross the Mason-Dixon Line? ► What items of historical significance are in this state? are in this state?
