3 Langston Hughes Assistant cook, launderer, busboy? After holding various odd jobs, this famous poet traveled to Africa and Europe working as a seaman, when finally in November 1924, he moved to Washington, D.C, and published his first poetry book, The Weary Blues in 1926. 4 Countee Cullen Born in New York City, like Hughes, Countee Cullen was the author of Color and Copper Son (1927), which met with controversy in the black community because Cullen did not give the subject of race the same attention he had given it in Color. click here for more info.click here for more info.

5 Robert Hayden Hayden's poetry gained international recognition in the 1960s and he was awarded the grand prize for poetry at the First World Festival of Negro Arts in 1966 for his book Ballad of Remembrance.
