QUESTIONS ABOUT MARINE- DERIVED NUTRIENTS AND C&R FISHERIES TO BE ANSWERED IN THE DISCUSSION Hal Michael Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife 360-902-2659 michahhm@dfw.wa.gov
2
QUESTIONS TO KEEP IN MIND How can sufficient amount of MDN be delivered to a stream? How can the differential effect of MDN on smolt age and productivity be modeled?

MDN NUTRIENT RELATIONSHIPS WITH STEELHEAD Increased MDN lowers smolt age Lower smolt age gives higher smolt capacity for stream and productivity per female Nutrients must be delivered to the parts of the system where there are rearing steelhead

CATCH AND RELEASE CONCERNS Does a C&R fish spawn in the same location, same fecundity, same survival to emergence, and same survival to repeat spawning as an uncaught fish? What is the effect of being caught multiple times? When is a fishery “too close” to spawning time? Is C&R of kelts harmful?
