2 Preschool Closes the Readiness Gap There is a growing recognition in California and across the nation of the importance of high-quality preschool in preparing children for success in school by closing the readiness gap. Three and four year-olds are active learners, who learn by doing. They learn through investigation, problem solving, play and focused teacher directed instruction. Jack OConnell, State Supt. 4 California Preschool Instructional Network (CPIN) CPIN was initiated in 2003-04 CPIN is a collaboration between California Department of Education (Child Development and Special Education Divisions) and California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA). CPIN provides a professional learning system for preschool teachers and administrators

5 CPINs Purpose Purpose Support consistent and high quality professional development and resources for administrators and teachers of early childhood education/school readiness programs So that they can: Prepare all children aged 3-5 for success in kindergarten and beyond Ensure that children learning English and those with special needs receive appropriate support

6 CPIN Has A Statewide Structure

7 CPIN Regional Implementation Each of the 11 regions establishes a regional network of administrators and leaders of early childhood education and school readiness programs For each region: School Readiness Lead and Part-time Special Education and English Learner Specialists Provides, facilitates and/or coordinates professional development opportunities for early childhood/school readiness staffs Develops and supports existing regional communication and collaboration among early childhood/school readiness providers

8 CPIN Focus for 2004-2006 Best practices for Early Literacy and Language Mathematics Network meetings for program directors/administrators Provide and support professional development for teachers Develop and support existing regional communication and collaboration system Provide resources and online courses California Preschool Learning Standards Hold Focus groups for field review of draft standards (June-July 2005) Conduct training sessions for approved standards in fall 2005
