3. How do we try to make cities livable? One major way is by zoning properties. Zoning laws are regulations that state where homes and businesses can be located Zoning is a powerful tool that can be used to control reckless use of land and encourage growth

4. A short history of zoning  The Equitable Building, constructed in 1916, blocked sunlight from hundreds of homes.  New York City passed laws that limited where tall buildings could be.  This began the practice of zoning.

17. What is URBAN SPRAWL?  When people move from the city to the suburbs and spread the city out over the surrounding environments  This hurts the environment.

18. Wouldn’t it be great if we could turn this trend around? How can we make this into something usable?

19. One way to do this is to get more out of land we’re already using.

20. Smart Growth  Zoning vacant lots to build more IN the city, rather than outside of it.  Mayor Rawlings- Blake is proposing that blocks of vacant property be re- zoned from residential to commercial.
