4
Classifying Igneous rocks = “Magma vs. Lava” Intrusive igneous rock – igneous rocks formed when magma cools slowly beneath the Earth’s surface. Extrusive igneous rock – igneous rocks formed when lava cools quickly on top of the Earth’s surface.
5
Vocabulary sedimentary rock These rocks are formed when fragments from minerals and other rocks become cemented together.

8
Classifying Sedimentary rock – “Pieces of Me” Clastic sedimentary rock – made from fragments of other rocks and minerals. Chemical sedimentary rock – solutions of dissolved rocks and minerals. Organic sedimentary rock – rock with fossils and plant or animal remains.
9
Vocabulary metamorphic rock These rocks are formed when rock material is exposed to heat and/ or pressure.

12
Classifying Metamorphic Rock – “I’m a changed rock, honest!” Contact metamorphism – when rock changes because it comes in contact with magma. Regional metamorphism – rock changes at areas where there is high pressure.
13
Metamorphic Rock (continued) Foliated metamorphic -rocks that have minerals aligned in what LOOKS LIKE layers. Nonfoliated metamorphic rocks do not have a pattern in the crystals.
