1 Introduction : Asbestosis is a lung disease associated with one's exposure to a useful, heat retardant product, made from fibrous material, that can be separated into fine fibers, called asbestos. Asbestos, though useful, poses serious medical risks to anyone exposed to it. The body tries to neutralize these fibres in various ways, and this process leads to further inflammation and cell damage. Individuals suffering from asbestosis are five times more likely to develop lung tumors/cancer, as afibrosis or scar tissue develops in the area around the small airways and air sacs. The thickening and scarring prevents oxygen and carbon dioxide from travelling between the air sacs and the blood cells, thus breathing becomes less efficient. Demograph: 100 construction workers in Singapore, working with Asbestos materials, from 25 – 50 years old. Knowledge of the risk of Asbestosis Awareness of any substitutes for Asbestosis Age group of which Asbestosis users, which shows symptoms of Asbestosis Knowledge of precautions to take, when exposed to Asbestos materials. Effects of asbestos on Asbestos users Number of hours spend near asbestos Conclusion: Asbestos is very popular among construction workers. The longer the amount of time spend using Asbestosis means a higher probability of getting Asbestosis, which is harmful to the body. However, most construction workers are unaware of the dangers of Asbestos, when handling them. This research confirmed that the issue of asbestosis is relevant in Singapore. Done By: Shawn Lee Mentor Group: M06302 Asbestos a danger… Shortness of breathReduced lung capacity Fatigue during exertionChest tightness Fatigue during rest (in the latter stages) Chest pain Crackling sounds in chest when breathing Run down or ill feeling Chronic coughLoss of appetite
