1 st International Joint Workshop on Computational Creativity Francisco C. Pereira Pablo Gervás Simon Colton

Computational Creativity Geraint Wiggins: –“Support, study and simulation via computational means of behaviours which would be deemed creative if exhibited by a human” (CC04 invited talk)

Influences A field of many diverse opinions –Naturally a very emotive topic Cross-disciplinary: –Cognitive Science, Artificial Intelligence, Philosophy, Psychology, Linguistics, … Application domains: –Music, visual arts, bioinformatics, mathematics, figurative language, design, games, humour, …

Computer Models Building and analysis of –Computational models –Actual implementations which work Emphasis on artefact generation –Rather than problem solving –Do we “solve” the problem of writing a poem or a sonata? Emphasis on aesthetics –Only one of which is problem solving utility

History of Workshops AISB’99 convention on Creativity –Gave the field much momentum Symposia in AISB 2000 – 2003 –Slight emphasis on frameworks, models, etc. Workshops in: –ICCBR’01, ECAI’02 and IJCAI’03 –Slight emphasis on implementations

Computational Creativity 04 (CC04) First joint workshop –Bringing it all together –10 (11) talks and 1 invited talk by Geraint Wiggins From Spain, Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Iceland, Iran (nearly)… –Short plenary session –Aiming to secure a special issue of a journal Many researchers in computational creativity –Use the case based reasoning paradigm –ICCBR’01 and ECCBR’04 were good ideas Ultimate aim is to become an independent conference –Possibly in 2005, definitely in 2006 –Please consider joining us

Please Read our Proceedings! 17 submissions –11 accepted, 6 rejected Framework papers –Philosophical abduction –Evolutionary roots of creativity –Role of gatekeepers in design communities –Explorative and transformative creativity Application papers –Discovering analogical compounds –Interpreting noun-noun constructions –Audio design using conceptual blending

Thanks To Our programme committee The authors of submitted papers –Both accepted and rejected ECCBR’04 organisers
