13 Well done so far! The Boss is very pleased Can you investigate some more about your local area?

14 Are these defences in your local area? Can you think of anything else that protects Chelmsford against flooding? Tidal Barriers There are no tidal barriers in the Chelmsford area. You might know about the Thames Barrier, which can be closed across the River Thames to protect London from flooding. Pumping Stations In our area, water pumping stations are usually used to move clean water and sewage, rather than for flood protection. The best known one was at Sandford Mill, which is now the industrial museum. Structures Yes, you have seen the sluice by the Essex Record Office. This is not really for managing floods, but when it rains heavily and the city rivers get full, the sluice can be opened to let some water through. Flood Plains Yes, In Central Park, and the meadows near the Baddow bypass. If there has been a lot of heavy rain, you can often see water in the meadows. Part of Central Park also floods, although not so often. Water Storage Yes, at Bond Street, outside Loch Fyne and Prezzo. The sunken area here is designed to flood but this would not happen very often. Most of the time, people can sit on the steps and enjoy the view. Channels Yes, in Chelmsford city centre, near Marks and Spencer and The Meadows shopping centre. The concrete banks help to stop the water overflowing into the city streets when there is a high water level. Drainage Yes, there is drainage everywhere! Just walk along any street and you will see drains in the edge of the road, which let rain water drain away and protect the roads and pavements from flooding. Upkeep Yes, each year, volunteers do a clean-up in the city centre rivers, which removes anything which might hold back the water, and makes it look tidy. Ditches & Dykes Yes, There is a dyke in Central Park to protect the fire station and houses nearby, when the river floods. There are also many ditches, especially in the countryside, which drain the water away from the farmland.
