Nuclear Energy

What is Nuclear Energy? Energy that comes from changes in the nucleus of an atom. The particles in the nucleus of atoms store a lot of potential energy. When a nuclei joins another nuclei or when the nucleus splits open energy is given off (kinetic energy).

2 Types of Nuclear Energy Fusion Fission

Fusion An example of this is the energy given off by the sun (light and heat). 2 or more nuclei join together Example: Hydrogen nuclei join together to make a larger helium nucleus.

Fission The nucleus of heavy elements, like uranium is split apart. The potential energy is given off. An example of this is nuclear power.

Nonrenewable Resource Resources that cannot be replaced or are replaced much more slowly than they are used. Examples: Fossil Fuels and Nuclear Energy

Nuclear Energy Can be used to generate electrical energy

Fossil Fuels Energy resources that are formed from the buried remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Plants stored energy from the sun (photosynthesis). The energy is released when fossil fuels are burned. An animal may also be used because they eat the plants.

Examples of Fossil Fuels Coal Petroleum (gasoline, kerosene, wax & plastics) Natural gas
