AN INTELLIGENT BUILDING DEFINED
By Rocco D’Uva
2
WHAT TO EXPECT INTELLIGENT BUILDING INTELLIGENT BUILDING FOCUS
Previous Understanding First CMap Current Understanding Final CMap INTELLIGENT BUILDING FOCUS Communication Systems Relation to Intelligent Building Importance What Systems are Available How do Systems Compare to Expectations
3
INTELLIGENT BUILDING (Pre-AE 790 Understanding)
Expectations: Building Systems Affected MEP, Lighting, Security Building Phases Affected Operational Commercial = Residential Expensive Automatic Functions Doors, Lights, HVAC, Entertainment Personality Communicate with User
4
INTELLIGENT BUILDING (Pre-AE 790 Understanding)
5
INTELLIGENT BUILDING (POST-AE 790 Understanding)
6
INTELLIGENT BUILDING (POST-AE 790 Understanding)
Expectations: Building Systems Affected All – from A to P Building Phases Affected All – from Design to Demolition Commercial vs. Residential Not All Expensive (Moore’s Law) Automatic Functions Just Beginning Sensors, Information Storage, Robotics, AI, etc. Personality vs. Necessary Information Transfer Control Systems, Networks, BIM, etc.
7
INTELLIGENT BUILDING FOCUS: – Communication Systems
Where In a Post-AE790 Understanding Does It Fit Why Is It Important What Systems are Currently Available How Do These Systems Compare to Expectations
8
Communication – (Topic 1 of 4)
Where Does It Fit In Building Phase: Operation Building Systems: Any or All
9
Communication – (Topic 2 of 4)
Why Is It Important Saves Time Saves Money Reduces Stress
10
Communication Products – (Topic 3 of 4)
What Systems are Currently Available Alarm/Security Systems U.C.ME (Control-See) LukWerks (WiLife) iControl System (iControl) Home “Awareness” Systems Home Heartbeat (Eaton)
11
Communication – U.C.ME
12
Communication – U.C.ME Notifies users on alarm situations via SMS, WAP, RSS, Phone, Fax, and Multimedia. OPC (OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) for Process Control) client alarm notification and analysis software. Supports bidirectional communication via SMS and Phone. Users may acknowledge alarms, query or change tag values via SMS or phone. Applications: Building management, Security systems, Industrial control, Water treatment, Healthcare.
13
Communication – LukWerks
14
Communication – LukWorks
Live video monitoring of up to six cameras Motion triggered recordings save disk space Powerful search and playback tools and cell phone alerts Free remote viewing for anywhere anytime access
15
Communication – iControl
16
Communication – iControl
Remotely monitor heating/AC and lighting levels Schedule heat, cooling or lighting Schedule automatic turn on/off of your energy systems Remotely know if windows and doors are closed, that lights are on or off Remotely take snapshots triggered by motion sensors in a home office, front or back door
17
Communication – Home Heartbeat
18
Communication – Home Heartbeat
Allows homeowners an all-in-one glimpse at the status and condition of their homes. The system can be set up to send s or text message alerts to cell phones when a problem is detected. Components use low-frequency radio chips to form a monitoring network throughout the home. The system performs a "health check" that occurs every 24 hours between the base and all components to ensure they are operating properly.
19
Communication (Topic 4 of 4)
Alarm/Security Only??? What about learning – will I receive s or texts every time the cat or dog crosses the motion sensor 2-way communication – Limited Availability Why not notify maintenance when service is required Data Saving – how much data is kept – for how long What about Gas leak, Open Windows (auto closers), Options are limited by amount or type of sensors Why are these systems installed after construction – why not installed during construction – as part of infrastructure Systems seem to lack “intelligence” – Reactive vs. Proactive How Do These Systems Compare to Expectations
