2. Corruption in the Catholic Church Time period referred to as Age of Faith. Many thought the only way to Heaven was through the Catholic Church. This put the church in a position of great power. The Humanist Movement led people to begin to question the church’s practices. A major problem with the Church was their conflict with European monarchs.

3. Corruption in the Catholic Church As feudalism declined, the Church wanted to make sure that it did not lose any power to the monarchs. Pope used excommunication as a way to force monarchs to go along with their wishes.

(1376) Pope Gregory moved the papal court back to Rome. (1378) Urban V was elected Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. While, Pope Clement VII sets up a rival papacy in Avignon, France. This time period is known as the Great Schism or Divide.

5. Corruption in the Catholic Church The most controversial practice for raising money for the Catholic Church was the practice of selling indulgences. The idea was based on the fact that a sinner could work to reduce his/her years in purgatory. When a person sinned, they could confess and perform a good deed or they could purchase an indulgence. Some clergy members taught that salvation could be achieved through the purchase of an indulgence.
