2. Safety First Science is a hands-on laboratory class.
You will be doing many laboratory activities, which require the use of hazardous chemicals and expensive lab equipment.
Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority.
To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been developed and provided to you in your student safety contract.
These rules must be followed at all times.
A signed lab safety contract is required to participate in labs.

3. General Safety Guidelines
Be Responsible at All Times. No horseplay, practical jokes, pranks, etc.
Follow all instructions carefully.
Do not play with lab equipment until instructed to do so.
Verbal & written directions. If you don’t understand ask for help.
Do not do any experiments without teacher approval.
Food, drink, and gum are not allowed in the science classroom.

4. Safety Equipment #1: Fire Extinguisher
NOTE: Only the TEACHER(S) can use the extinguisher!

5. Safety Equipment #2: Fire Blanket
How to use: If someone's clothes catch on fire, wrap them in the blanket quickly to smother the flames DO
DON’T
use the blanket if a person catches on fire
use the blanket on a liquid fire, lab equipment, or objects in the room - this could make the fire spread

6. Safety Equipment #3: Safety Shower
This piece of equipment is ONLY used if a person spills a dangerous chemical on themselves
How to use: Stand under the shower and pull the triangle down DO
DON’T
use the shower if the spill is on a part of the body that CANNOT fit in the sink
use the shower if the spill is on a part of the body that CAN fit in the sink

8. Safety Equipment #4: Eyewash station
This piece of equipment is used when your eyes are exposed to a hazardous chemical.
How to use:
Step 1: Flip over the caps, press down on the button, and water will spout up
Step 2: Immediately flush eyes for at least 15 minutes.
Things to remember:
Keep the eyes open and rotate the eyeballs in all directions to remove contamination from around the eyes. An injured person may need help holding the eyelids open.

9. Safety Equipment #5: Fire Exit
In case of a fire, make note of where the closest exit is from the classroom
From our classroom: When you reach the classroom door, make a left and exit left to the outside doors

Ricardo decided to do a lab activity that he read about in a library book before the teacher came into the classroom.
Stephanie says that the safety goggles mess up her hair and give her raccoon eyes. She refuses to wear them.
Barbie and Ken accidentally break a beaker full of some chemical. Instead of risking getting in trouble they quickly clean up the mess with paper towel and throw it in the garbage.
