MERSEA Integrated System Exeter 14-16 Nov 2005 IGST (F. Blanc) Brief Overview of Mersea http://www.mersea.eu.org
2
Content The Mersea System Mission Served by (upstream) To serve (downstream) A System of Systems 8 core components Observing systems (3) Forecasting systems (5) The Overall Service Classification of users Users versus geographical targets Charters to link actors Cross-cutting functions
3
The MERSEA System 1- Mission NW Shelves ARCTIC BALTIC SEA MED SEA GLOBAL OCEAN for real-time monitoring & forecasting of the ocean physics (temperature, salinity, currents) bio-geochemistry (carbon cycle), & eco-systems (chlorophyll, nutritives) on global & regional scales – high resolution 4D depiction- (Global Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Arctic Ocean, North West European Shelves)
4
The MERSEA System 2- Served by (upstream) satellite ocean observation systems in situ ocean observation systems NWP (weather) systems NOP (ocean) systems Research outputs Ocean numerical modelling provides coherent frameworks within which synergies between observations & model information can evolve forward in time.
5
The MERSEA System 3- To serve (downstream) user service providers (the ones that customize the information to the end- users) other systems (e.g. coastal systems, seasonal forecasting systems, oil drift systems, etc.)
6
A System of Systems 1- 8 core components 8 data production components
7
A System of Systems 2- Observing system < MERSEA IN SITU 1.In situ observations (CORIOLIS) Operator: Ifremer, France ARGO GTS GOSUD OceanSites ENACT ENSEMBLES

specific general externalinternal operational R&D 5- Operations (System Management / Qualification) 3 - Public Use 1 - Privileged Use (Core systems) 2 - Standard Use (Standard Products) 4 - Specific Use (Specific Products) For on request access of routine qualified products Pre-operational & prototyping activities, Research, SMEs, Int.& Gov. Agencies, Intermediate users, GMES services For system monitoring & supervision (visibility on individual systems, KPI) Operators,Project managers, Task leaders, Centre representatives, Data producers, Service providers For education & public outreach (front/demonstration window for operational oceanography) General public, Agencies,Education, Funding entities, Media Not in the scope of the project For exchanging of Products & Services on a routine mode (computer-to-computer link, high-level quality service) Observing systems, Operational centers, Product valorisation centers, GODAE partners, Meteo agencies, Coastal centres, Climate centers The Overall Service 1- Classification of users
11
The Overall Service 1- Users versus Geographical targets (1/2) NEA ARCTIC BALTIC SEA MED SEA GLOBAL OCEAN Global Ocean Regional (for core systems) North-East Atlantic Mediterranean Sea Baltic/North Sea Arctic ocean Sub-regions & shelves (for nested systems)
12
The Overall Service 1- Users versus Geographical targets (2/2) MFSTEP sub-regions and shelf systems (MOON) Sub-regional models at 3 km Shelf models at 1.5 km
13
The Overall Service 2- Charters to link actors a decentralised architecture associated to crosscutting functions
14
The Overall Service 3- Cross-cutting functions (1/2) Information on the web … Product & Distribution Standards … Overall Assessment … Access conditions … Monitoring, Supervision … critical for an overall service - full integration, full consistency -
15
The Overall Service 3- Cross-cutting functions (2/2) Information on the web Mission charter –What thematic product/information is produced/managed by the service ? Product and distribution standards Interoperability charter –How can the information be delivered/accessed (format, distribution servers,...) ? Overall Assessment Quality charter –Metrics, Ocean Indicators Access conditions Business charter –Under which conditions is the information delivered/accessed (data policy, access rights,...) ? Monitoring/Supervision Qualification charter –Proof of operationnality and quality, proof of an integrated system, a system of systems
