(14) Organisms and environments. The student knows that reproduction is a characteristic of living organisms and that the instructions for traits are governed in the genetic material. The student is expected to: (A)define heredity as the passage of genetic instructions from one generation to the next generation; ( C )recognize that inherited traits of individuals are governed in the genetic material found in the genes within chromosomes.
2
4.26.11 Genetic word wall We will create a genetics word wall TEK 7.14 Warm up:
3
Reproduction: is done by all living things to keep their species going
4
Heredity: the passage of genetic instructions from one generation to the next generation;
5
Asexual reproduction: when there is only one parent and offspring are identical to the parent
6
Sexual reproduction: there are two parents and the offspring have traits from both the mom and the dad (diverse offspring)
7
Traits: characteristics that are inherited from the genetic material passed from parent to offspring
8
Genes: give an organism specific traits and can be found within a chromosome on the DNA
9
Chromosomes: are found inside the nucleas and contain DNA
10
Recall: Gregor Mendel is the father of genetics Summary: Mendel studied pea plants to get a better understanding of how traits were passed down from one generation to the next OUT: Where can you find the genetic material in a eukaryotic cell? In a prokaryotic cell? **use complete sentences**
11
4.27.11 Edusmart Genetics We will use edusmart to further our understanding of genetics TEK 7.14 A&C Warm up
12
Recall: specific traits can be found on particular genes Summary: describe the difference of a dominate trait and a recessive trait Out: Gregor Mendel, the father of genetics, didn’t have a microscope to see inside the nucleus of a pea cell. Describe the method he used to study genetics. ** use complete sentences with capital letters and periods. No PRONOUNS**
13
4.28.11 Sponge Bob Punnet Sq We will use sponge bob to practice punnet squares. TEK 7.14 A&C Warm up:
14
Homologenous: both genes are identical (RR, rr) Heterogenous: the genes are different (Rr) Dominate: always shows and is a capital letter Recessive: only shows up if there are two recessive genes ( 2 lower case letters) Phenotype: what it looks like ( round, square, blue) Genotype: the letters that represent the genes the offspring have (RR, Rr, rr)
15
Recall: Punnet squares help us predict what offspring will look like. Summary: Explain why genotypes have two letters and not one Out: Solve the Punnet square: Sally is a dominate homogenous brown hair and Jack is recessive homogenous blond hair. What will their offspring look like?
16
4.29.11 Monster gene lab We will create a marshmellow alien using dominate and recessive genes TEK 7.14 A&C Warm up:
17
NEED TO FIND PAPER TO FILL THIS IN!
18
Recall: dominate traits show up more often and are represented by capital letters Summary: explain why your monster ended up look like that. OUT: how can you use the information you learned this week to determine if your mom or dad has more dominate traits.
