How to Use the Brunton Traverse Calculator
2
When We Last Left Our Story Harrison Ford and Charley Chaplin had just completed their closed traverse Their Traverse failed to close by about ½ of a mile so they suspect that there is a “Bust” somewhere in their traverse. Harrison prepares to use the Brunton Traverse to Find that mistake.
3
Standing on Point A, Harrison Sights Point B He looks down and reads his compass –It reads N 83 W Harrison Enters his data in the Brunton Traverse Calculator –(his cell phone will run Excel so he does this stuff in the field) He needs to identify the NW quadrant 1= North 2= West He enters the angle he observed
4
Harrison Paces the Distance to Point B Harrison walks 118 paces. According to his calibration from walking the 100 foot line, one of his paces is about 3.1 feet –This must mean he walked about 118*3.1 = 366 feet He puts this in his spreadsheet
5
The Brunton Traverse Calculator Gives Him the Coordinates of B Harrison now gets out his coordinate comparison Table he is filling out Looking at the coordinates Harrison can see that he is within about 10 feet So this is probably not his half mile “bust”
6
Standing on Point B Harrison Sites with his Brunton to C He read N 34 degrees West He then paces off the distance to point C –At 133 paces –X 3.1 feet per pace –He gets 412.3 feet He Enters his data in the spreadsheet Note code for North West Quadrant
7
He Gets the Coordinates of the Next Point and Puts it in the Comparison Sheet From the Brunton Traverse Calculator to The comparison sheet Looking at the numbers it does not appear that the survey bust occurred Before point C
8
Harrison Ford next goes to point C and Sights D Note that in the Brunton Traverse he is sighting only the points he occupied during his closed traverse – not every building corner! He reads North 33 West He paces to point D and gets 330 feet He inputs the data into the Brunton Traverse Calculator
9
He Inputs his data to the comparison table Calculator to Table Nope – no bust yet, the coordinates are still fairly close
10
Harrison Goes to D and Sights E His compass says South 47 West He paces out 408 Feet He enters his data Note he has now put in 2 because 1=north 2=south It’s Station E and All is Well
11
About This Time Harrison Ford See’s Dr. Paul coming Dr. Paul is here to change out his Brunton Compass that works in Quadrants for one that reads straight Azimuths Harrison stands on point E and Sights Point F –The Azimuth is 157 degrees –He paces out 411 feet He Enters his data Note that nothing is entered in the Quadrant fields But the Azimuth is entered in the Azimuth Field
12
Harrison Puts his information into the Comparison Table Wow Dog – I think we have something here! There is a big difference between the Brunton and Conventional Traverse Data here.
13
Harrison Goes Back to Point E and Sights F His Compass reading is definitely 157 degrees He looks at his sketch – the sketch seems to indicate a movement to the south east which corresponds to his compass He looks at the traverse calculator for the conventional traverse and finds an azimuth of about 337 was predicted from the Angle Turned What the ##$$@@! He Exclaims – that’s 180 degrees Off –How can anyone get turn an angle and be 180 degrees off on a Transit?!!!
14
Harrison Thinks Charlie was on the Transit shooting this – how could he get his angle 180 degrees off? Then he remembers (A and B vernier windows) His blood begins to boil with a desire to Kill –But if he kills his partner they cannot redo the survey! He remembers that during his acting career he was always been rewarded for gratuitous violence! –Ya That’s the Answer –Harrison goes off looking for Charlie Chaplin!
