MEASUREMENT & SCIENTIFIC TOOLS

The International System Of Units The International System of Units (SI Units)- the internationally accepted system for measurement. They use a standard of measurement called base units and a set of prefixes to tell the size of the unit. Easy to convert one SI unit to another because SI is based on units of ten

Common SI Units & Conversions Meter (m)- the basic SI unit for length(distance) Grams (g)- The basic SI unit for mass. Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object Volume- the amount of space matter occupies. Solids – cubic meters (m 3 ) Liquids- liters (l) Temperature-measure of how hot or cold something is. measure in: Celsius(C) Kelvin (K)

Significant Figures The # of digits in a measurement that you know with a certain degree of reliability. Limit to 2 significant figures after the decimal. Ex: 127.654321 = 127.65 56.28765 = 56.29

Scientific Tools  Tool- anything that helps you do a task.  Measuring Lengths & Distances (m): Rulers Meter sticks tape measure  Measuring Volume of a liquid (l): Graduated cylinders Beakers Flasks Test tubes

 Measuring Mass of an object (grams-g)  Triple beam balance  Measuring Temperature ( Celsius or Kelvin)  Thermometer  Measuring time ( seconds(s), min (m)):  stopwatch

 Safety Tools: Goggles Lab coats Gloves tongs Tweezers  Analyzing Tools: Pencil/pens Log book Computers Calculator Camera

 Other Tools: Eye droppers Microscope Magnifying glass Hot plates Trays Scalpels Glass stirrer Mortar and pestle Binoculars compass
