Until the outcome of the National Curriculum review, all changes relate to assessment regulations – the mathematical content doesn’t change. The definition of “end of course” still needs to be clarified. DfE aims are to reduce needless early entry, which AQA supports. However, some students are able to complete GCSEs early and move on to further study.

10. How will performance tables change? These changes will affect performance tables from 2014 onwards From 2014, no qualification can be counted as more than one qualification in the headline measures of performance. Dual award GCSEs such as GCSE Science will continue to count as two separate qualifications. Only existing full course GCSEs, established iGCSEs and AS levels will automatically count. 11. What are the criteria for qualifications to be included in the headline measures? They must be at least equivalent in size to a GCSE (120 guided learning hours) They must use a grading system (i.e. cannot be pass/fail only) They must include both synoptic and external assessment They must lead to progression to study at a higher level in the same field or more broadly They must have a proven track record although new qualifications may be able to demonstrate this at a later date Content covered must be appropriate The response makes clear that schools may offer qualifications that do not meet the above criteria and that performance in all qualifications will be reported. Since its introduction, 47 per cent of pupils taking GCSEs in 2013 are now studying a combination of EBacc subjects – English, maths, a language, history or geography, and two sciences. In 2011, 22 per cent of pupils were entered for the EBacc in state-funded schools. Schools are not entering as many boys as girls for the EBacc. AS Use of Maths comprises a compulsory Algebra unit plus two FSMQs from this list: Data Analysis, Dynamics, Decision Maths, Hypothesis Testing and Mathematical Principles for Personal Finance. A2 Use of Maths comprises the Advanced FSMQ: Calculus (the only A2 level FSMQ), a Portfolio (coursework) unit and a Mathematical Comprehension unit. All 6 units are equally weighted.
