Embalming: (preserved bodies of the dead) First used for pharaohs Believed that the soul couldn’t live after death without a body to return to – so the dead pharaoh wouldn’t be able to protect Egypt. Two parts of the spirit the ba and the ka Life force Personality

Embalming technique Body taken to the wabet and placed on a slanted board. Internal organs removed and dried separately (lungs, liver, intestines, stomach) Canopic Jars Brain and eyes removed Body covered in natron (salt) for 40 days

Embalming After 40 days, body taken to the per nefer (the beautiful house) Body washed, oiled stuffed and plumped with mud, chaff, linen Wrapped in layers of linen bandage (15-20) takes about 15 days Placed in a sarcophagus and entombed with belongings. Entire process about 70 days
