Graphs – data displays We will explore 3 types today. Bar Graphs, Frequency charts, and Histograms. We will do a quick review of other graphs and their uses. Higher learning will be done today
2
Types of graphs and their uses. percentages Line Graph Change over time Bar Graph Distinct categories Groups data into intervals Displays data from a frequency chart
3
Example of a circle graph
4
Example of a Line Graph
5
Bar Graph - what does a bar graph look like?
6
Title label Shows distinct categories But no discrete data If you need to know details this is NOT the graph to use.

IntervalsTallyfrequency 0 - 5||||4 6 - 11||2 12 - 170 18 - 23|||3 Frequency Chart or table – arranges data in equal intervals or groups. No discrete data is present.

Use the following data to create a frequency chart (or table) Number of hours students spent watching TV 2 15 4 4 7 20 25 50 14 3 7 5 16 22 23 28 Create intervals Make sure that you include the smallest number and the largest number. Each interval must have the same number of entries. What would you suggest? You have 2 minutes – turn your timers. 1-10 11-20 21-30 31-40 41-50 Would work

Now let’s create our frequency chart. Our data was: 2 15 4 4 7 20 25 50 14 3 7 5 16 22 23 28 1| 0 4|||| 4 41-50 31-40 21-30 11-20 1-10 frequencyTallyIntervals 7|||| ||

IntervalsTallyfreq 1-10|||| ||7 11-20||||4 21-30||||4 31-400 41-50|1 Now let’s make a histogram using the frequency chart data TV Watched students 1-10 11-20 21-30 31-40 41-50 hours 876543210876543210 What do you notice?
11
Your turn now – Use the data below Use Sage and Scribe structure to create a frequency chart Change roles then create the histogram Number of pets owned by students 3 9 19 5 4 0 2 4 2 7 3 0 8 6
