Data, Probability, Circle Graphs
2
A Quick Review… 5, 8, 9, 3, 10 Mean – The average. (Add all the numbers in your data set, and divide by the total number of numbers in the data set.) (5+8+9+3+10)/ 5 = 7 Median – Middle number in a data set. (Order from least to greatest… it is the number in the middle.) 3, 5, 8, 9, 10 … = 8 Mode – The most commonly occurring number in the data set. No answer, no numbers are repeated. Range – Take the biggest number and subtract the smallest number from it to find the range. 10-3 = 7

Probability… What you need to know! Probability – The likelihood that an event will happen. Theoretical Probability - Probability of an event happening, “in theory” or logically. P(event) = the number of favorable outcomes total number of possible outcomes EXAMPLE: The odds of throwing a dice and getting a 4. P(event) = 1 6

Probability… More you need to know! Experimental Probability - Probability of an event happening, based on an experiment performed. P(event) = number of times an event happens total number of trials EXAMPLE: The number of times a 4 is rolled, when a dice is tossed a total of 25 times. A 4 is rolled 5 of the 25 times the dice is tossed. P(event) = 5 = 1 25 5

How to make a Circle Graph… (Part 1) A class is given a survey related to their favorite pets. The results are given in the frequency table below. PetFrequency“Fraction” it Occurs Do the Math… (multiply by 360) Degrees of Circle Dog75/20 =.35.35 * 360126 Cat3 Fish5 Turtle5 TOTAL:20----------360 Extension Added to Frequency Table

How to make a Circle Graph… (Part 2) Draw a circle… Hint: Use your protractor to do this! Use your protractor to make each of the sections of your bar graph the appropriate number of degrees (as shown in your extended frequency table). Create a key for the Circle Graph (patterns or colors) AND/OR Label the Circle Graph itself. Include a title!!! 108 Degree Example
