6 Learning Outcomes for Teamwork Session 1.Describe why teams are important for student learning. 2.Describe characteristics of a successful teamwork experience. 3.Describe the five tenets of cooperative learning in your own words. 4.Evaluate situations to determine if they satisfy the five tenets of CL. You, the workshop participant, should be able to : (Page 1 of 14) 5.Realize the need to develop students’ teamwork skills. 6.Identify problems associated with organizing and managing teams. 7.Realize the importance of providing an instructional framework to nurture teamwork. 8.Evaluate problems for appropriateness of teamwork. 9.Design a problem appropriate for student teamwork in one of your courses.

8 Why use teamwork in your teaching? Team Activity, 3 minutes  Split your team into pairs  One pair create a list of PROs  One pair create a list of CONs Group discussion, 7 minutes

9 Some of Our Pro’s Tough problems require teams Teams used extensively in research, government and industry. ABET requires students to be able to function on teams. Vehicle to develop team skills such as leadership and conflict management. Promote deeper understanding. Provide a diversity of viewpoints. Promote elaboration where students must articulate their position. Promote creative collaboration. Synergy. Develop a creative solution.

10 Some Con’s It is hard work. Some students think it is unfair. Takes time to develop. May lower course evaluations.

11 Identify differences between group work and teamwork. Team Activity, 3 minutes Group Discussion, 5 minutes

12 Group Work vs. Teamwork Group Work – Activity spans short time frame. – Groups formed spontaneously. – Groups breakup after a session (little or no commitment). – Most undergraduates equipped with skills to do group work. Teamwork – Activities span long time frame. – Teams formed carefully. – Teams stay formed and have commitments. – Undergraduates are ill equipped with skills to do teamwork.

14 Apply the five tenets of CL to a common teamwork situation. Cooperative Learning (CL) tenets are provided in a handout (Page 2 of 14). Team Activity, 5 minutes. Select a common team situation such as a sports team, orchestra or a marching band. Write a few sentences about how each of the five tenets are met in this situation. Audience Discussion, 5 minutes.

15 Teaching Scenario Jigsaw Jigsaw Activity In your teaching scenario (Page 3 of 14), determine if the five tenets are satisfied. If not, describe why not. Review the assigned scenario description (individual), 2 minutes. Review scenario with your “symbol” group, 5 minutes. “Teach” the results back to your team, 8 minutes.

16 Your experiences with teamwork Discussion, 10 minutes Conclusions – Traditional courses do not address teamwork. – Teamwork is facilitated with the 5 CL tenets. – Most students are ill equipped to do teamwork. – They lack the needed interpersonal skills.
