Colonial Interactions Objective: Students will analyze the 3 Colonial regions and become experts by researching information and teaching partners. This will culminate in a poster project. Essential Question: How did colonists attract new settlers to North America? How did colonies interact with one another? How did the early history of the colonies effect the future of North America? Standard: 1.2 - Students will compare lifestyles in the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies according to race, class, and gender by utilizing one of the big 11 social studies skills.

Homework: Due by Friday, September 4, 2015 New England Colonies Worksheet Read background information and answer questions 1 & 2, front & back.

Write a ONE SENTENCE summary on TWO news stories from CNN Student News. You may take notes during the video. After the video you will have 5 minutes to write your 2 summaries. Summary: “A brief statement or account of the main points of something.” Discussion to follow: What do you think? Warm-Up: CNN Student News

Assignment: Colonial Regions Jigsaw Directions: Your job is to become an “expert” on ONE of the Colonial Regions in the Americas. After finding all the information below on your own, you will take your information back to your SHOULDER PARTNER and teach them about your region. In turn each SHOULDER PARTNER will also help you learn about each of their own respective regions. SHOULDER PARTNER’S will write a 2-4 SENTENCE SUMMARY of the taught Colonial Regions.

Assignment: Colonial Regions Jigsaw #5: The geography of the New England Colonies: featured long and heavy cold winters, warm/hot summers, and rolling hills and cliffs. #5: The geography of the Middle Colonies was often heavily forested, had rich soil, and there were many broad navigable rivers. #5: The geography of the Southern Colonies is often flat, rural, humid, with the Appalachian Mountains to the west. #10: Interesting Facts about your Colonial Region. What is unique about your Colonial Region that others might lack? #11: Write a 2-4 sentence summary of your group member’s Colonial Region.

Assessment: Colonial Advertisement Using what you know and researched from the Jigsaw, create a Colonial Advertisement Poster. Create a poster to attract new people and new colonists to your specific colonial region (i.e. New England, Middle, or Southern) that you researched. Design and color your picture with the details from the Jigsaw Activity. Poster MUST have both a PICTURE and DESCRIPTIVE WORDS relating to your Colonial Region.
