3
Produce the parathyroid hormone Four small glands Found in the neck behind thyroid gland Each gland is about the size of a grain of rice PARATHYROID GLANDS
4
Raises the calcium level in the blood, which keeps the body functioning normally Peptide chain Ways Parathyroid Raises the Calcium Level: 1.Breaking down bone to release calcium 2.Helps the body absorb calcium from food 3.Increase the kidney’s ability to retain calcium FUNCTION OF THE HORMONE
5
The thyroid gland is similar to a thermostat Maintains a strict level of calcium in the blood If the calcium level is too low, the hormone is produced If the calcium level gets too high, the hormone stops NEGATIVE FEEDBACK
6
More common in women Usually only one gland is diseased, but up to all four can be hyperactive Effects: Weakened bones Kidney stones How to cure it? HYPERPARATHYROIDISM
7
Usually only occurs from removal of parathyroid glands. Effects: Brittle hair Dry hair and skin Cramps Weakened tooth enamel HYPOPARATHYROIDISM
