A COLLECTIVE NOUN IS A NOUN THAT NAMES A GROUP OF INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE OR THINGS. SOMETIMES THEY ACT AS ONE UNIT. SOMETIMES THEY ACT AS A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS. Collective Nouns

Examples: The committee votes on the new chair. The committee have split their votes on the issue. The history club plans a debate. The history club are proud of their individual debating skills.

Compound Nouns A compound noun is made up of two or more words. Examples: bookshelves junior high school cure-all

Pronouns and Antecedents A pronoun takes the place of a noun. An antecedent is the word to which the pronoun refers. Pronouns and antecedents must agree in gender and in number.

Examples: The sisters stopped dancing when they found their grades were dropping. The movie is not as good as its preview made it seem. Since Anne Marie moved, she calls me once a day.

Indefinite Pronouns refer to people, places, things, often without specifying which ones There are many indefinite pronouns. Some are singular; some are plural; some can be either one.

Subject- Verb Agreement With a compound subject… When a compound subject is connected by and, the verb is usually plural. El Paso and Dallas are my favorite Texas cities. The museums and historical sites in Chicago attract many visitors. EXCEPTION- If the parts of the compound subject are thought of as one person or thing, the subject is singular. Franks and beans is a popular meal when camping.

Compound Subjects When two singular subjects are joined by or or nor, the verb is singular. When two plural subjects are joined by or or nor, use a plural verb. A bicycle or a skateboard is a good way to get to the park. Neither boys nor men like to wear a tie.

Compound Subjects When a compound subject is made up of one singular and one plural subject joined by or or nor, the verb agrees with the closer subject. Either the monuments or the Alamo is interesting to see. Either the Alamo or the monuments are interesting to see.

Inverted Word Order When a subject follows a verb, they still must agree. Hint– rearrange the sentence to find the subject. Then you can check for agreement. Example: Where are the tickets to the concert? The tickets to the concert are where. Example: Here are the photos I took at the beach. The photos I took at the beach are here.

Indefinite Pronoun Agreement You must learn which indefinite pronouns are singular and which are plural to ensure subject-verb agreement. For indefinite pronouns that may be either singular or plural you must look at their antecedents. All of his pets demand a great deal of attention.
