Introduction to Animals Chapter 25
2
Animal Overview Animal kingdom is extremely diverse ALL Animals are: - Multicellular –E–E–E–Eukaryotes –N–N–N–No cell wall Also share many other characteristics…
3
Characteristics of All Animals 1) Multicellular Organization –C–C–C–Cells specialize to perform different functions Allows organisms to adapt & evolve –D–D–D–Different cells held together by cell junctions to form tissues 2) Heterotrophy –H–H–H–Herbivore (only plants)-Omnivore (both) –C–C–C–Carnivore(only meat)-Decomposers (dead/decaying matter)
4
Characteristics of All Animals (con’t) 3) Sexual Reproduction –G–G–G–Gametes fuse to form zygote (fertilized egg) –A–A–A–As zygote multiplies, cells differentiate into body parts 4) Movement –N–N–N–Nervous & Muscular system work together to control body
5
Animal Classification Animal Kingdom has 9 Phyla: –8–8–8–8 Invertebrate Phyla (no backbone) i.e.: earthworms, insects –1–1–1–1 Chordata (spinal cord) Includes Vertebrates (have backbone) –i–i–i–i.e.: mammals, birds, fish
6
Symmetry Asymmetry: none –i–i–i–i.e. sponges Radial: radiate from center (no left/right, etc) –i–i–i–i.e. jellyfish, sea anenomes Bilateral: 2-sided –i–i–i–i.e. humans, lobsters, butterflies
