Activity PART 1 1. Listen to the passage read aloud. 2. VISUALIZE the setting. What do you see in your mind’s eye? How does it smell, feel, etc.? 3. Create a BUBBLE MAP (Topic: The Scarlet Ibis Opening Setting) (Frame of Reference: Prior Knowledge) 4. You must have 8 attaching bubbles (adjectives), which describe the elements of the image.

Activity extension… PART 2 –On a clean sheet of loose leaf with MLA format expand your Bubble Map into a DOUBLE BUBBLE MAP. –The left bubble remains The Scarlet Ibis setting. –The right bubble will have the topic “A Sadness Setting.” –NOTE: save space between for the shared qualities.

Think about a time when something particularly sad happened to you and/or your family. Where were you? How did your surroundings look and feel? -Develop at least 9 bubbles, adjectives, describing this experience. -Develop at least 3 shared/ common bubbles between this and The Scarlet Ibis. -You are comparing PLACES.

“The Scarlet Ibis” By James Hurst –The narrator is Doodle’s older brother. Doodle is a child with physical disabilities and severe health problems. Predict how the relationship between the brothers might affect the story. Respond in one paragraph. “At times I was mean to Doodle. One day I took him up to the barn loft and showed him his casket, telling him how we all believed he would die” (Hurst 557).
