Curriculum Night, 2009 Pre-Algebra

Pre-Algebra “Big Ideas” Real Numbers Linear Functions Pythagorean Theorem/ Indirect Measurement ScatterplotsSlope Equations & Inequalities

Pre-Algebra Concepts/Skills to Maintain Ratios, Proportions, & Percents Factors & Multiples Box plots and Histograms Volume and Surface Area

NCTM Process Standards Problem-Solving - Students grapple with tasks that require them to draw on prior knowledge, employ varied strategies, and develop new mathematical understanding. Communication - Students share their own mathematical thinking through various means (speaking, writing, drawing, the use of manipulatives, etc) and benefit from the mathematical thinking of others. Connections - Students recognize and explore the interrelatedness of mathematical ideas, the connections between mathematics and other subjects, and the relevance of mathematics to their everyday lives. Representation - Students explore and understand the various ways that mathematical ideas are represented, including words, symbolic expressions, and graphical displays. Reasoning & Proof - Students explain, clarify, justify, defend, and revise their thinking.

Despite the fact that we are offering 2 different math classes for 8 th grade, we continue to differentiate instruction! Each class was carefully selected to provide the most supportive learning environment for each student. Math Instruction

Discovery Approach Students are provided with opportunities to figure out, or discover, mathematical ideas and concepts on their own. Teacher acts as a facilitator as students experiment, discuss, and explore. Once the discovery is made, the mathematical concept has more meaning and relevance to the student.

Or Not... The direct learner is more able to be successful when given the mathematical concept, provided with opportunities to practice the concept, and then explore and discover why and how the concept works.

Word Study Cross-Curricular 2 math words per week Assessed in math class or media assessment

Homework www.csdnc.org HomeworkNewsletters Extra Practice Website Scope & Sequence Expectations All work must be shown on notebook paper. All work must be checked using the answer key, available on website. Calculators are not only permitted, but highly encouraged.
