DMR: Daily Math Review A quick review of concepts that have already been taught. Time frame: 5 – 10 minutes Ongoing review Formative assessment Data collection tool Whole group instruction activity

Problem of the Day OR Problem of the Week A consistent format for problem solving. Time frame: 5 – 10 minutes. Can be used whole group or for independent student work. Over time these problems become more complex.

Problem-Solving Strategies Draw a picture Make a table Look for patterns in the problem Make a list (organized) Try the problem, check the quantities, revise it Write a number sentence Act out the problem if it has action Use reasoning (what makes sense) Work backwards Solve a similar and simpler problem Make a graph

Problem of the Day Sam has four number cards: 4, 5, 8, and 2 What is the greatest 3-digit number he can make? The greatest 2-digit number? The least 3-digit number? The least 2-digit number?

Literature and Mathematics

The Importance of Algebra Pre-algebra and Algebra are the foundation for higher level mathematics. So, why not teach starting in in the primary grades. It involves patterns, variables, charts, diagrams, and missing digits as well as missing numbers. Increase the rigor of mathematics during the early elementary grades and students will be mathematically ready in middle and high school.

Background Knowledge

Building background knowledge in your students is important because: It helps to activate prior knowledge they have about a subject or concept Provides a foundation for learning a new concept Helps to develop schema

Background Knowledge Add this to your teacher tool kit: Schema A hierarchical representation of knowledge, connected to other related information.

Assessment The purpose of assessment is NOT to take a grade. The purpose of assessment is to check students’ progress, level of understanding of new knowledge, and teacher performance. It is just as important to check students progress as it is to check for the success of instruction.

Types of Assessments Formative and Summative Paper and pencil Entrance and Exit tickets Project/Problem based learning Individual or group projects Creating a song or play Incorporating art and music Technology based Student choice Anything else creative that is not the traditional paper and pencil
