Uses “you.” Not used often in stories, it leaves a foreboding feeling. Uses “he”, “she”, or “it.” Told from the perspective of a fly on the wall. No one’s thoughts are understood.

6 Elements of the Short Story  Third person, subjective: - - Limited: - - Limited: - - Omniscient: - - Omniscient:  Unreliable Narrator: “He”, “she”, “it.” But this time we can read the thoughts of at least one character. The narrator conveys the thoughts of just one character. The narrator conveys the thoughts of numerous or all characters. A narrator who either is not “in the know” or is deceiving the reader

9 Elements of the Short Story  Situational Irony:  Dramatic Irony:  Verbal Irony: Something happens that is the opposite of what is expected (ex: to avoid a wet dog splashing him, a guy trips into a pond) The audience is aware of information that characters in the story are unaware of (ex: Romeo does not know that Juliet is pretending to be dead) You mean the opposite of what you say (ex: “well aren’t you clever”)
