4 Three Year Research Project Sustainability of CBDM Year 1 (2002): Framework for sustainable CBDM through 6 case studies in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia Year 2 (2003): Development of Guidelines for Sustainable CBDM through field testing Year 3 (2004): 10-year review of CBDM activities, Partnership building in CBDM, Publication of User’s Guide, Dissemination of CBDM, including WCDR

6 FINDINGS Importance of strengthening capacity for motivation of people at the community level through participatory methods Need for a paradigm shift from relief to risk management Mutual support at all levels Closing the gap between policy and implementation Resilient communities with "collective security" through structural and non-structural means CONCLUSION The Symposium became an opportunity to build consensus amongst various disaster management constituents, not only a value adding event to further CBDM but also a knowledge sharing opportunity. It is hoped that knowledge and spirit augmented through this symposium would be further carried to the WCDR. Proceedings of the Symposium is now available

7 International Conference on Partnership in CBDM in Asia Pre-event for WCDR, 24-26 Aug. 2004, Delhi Co-organized by UNCRD, UN ISDR, SEEDS, Kyoto University Objective To initiate partnership formation process for CBDM in Asia towards WCDR - Suggest possible ways of CBDM partnership - Review CBDM issues and activities over last 10 years - Draft a plan of action of CBDM for next 10 years Expected Participants - National and local governments - Non-government organizations (NGOs) - International/ regional organizations - Academic Institutions

8 UNCRD Contribution at WCDR 2005 UNCRD Session on Sustainable CBDM - To enhance consensus over the notion of “community” in realizing comprehensive disaster management - To establish framework for CBDM as one of principles in defining sustainable and pro-poor development - To encourage the endorsement of political support - To recommend a framework for successful CBDM Proposals on symposium/side events - Symposium on safer housing development, including demonstration of shake table testing - Education and School Safety - “Show and Tell” disaster experiences
