3 Short Story Read-Around Each person is going to read their favorite part of their short story. This could be as little as two or three sentences or as big as ONE paragraph.

4 Third Marking Period  Discuss the dissolution of Melinda and Heather’s friendship and the effect it has on Melinda.  Analyze the events and effects of Valentine’s Day on Melinda and the aftermath.  Melinda wishes her science teacher would teach them about love and betrayal instead of about the birds and the bees. Where do we learn about things like that? Can we learn about love from a book? Explain?  Mr. Freeman tells his class, “You must walk alone to find your soul.” What does this mean? Is it true?

5 Metaphoric and Symbolic Titles  Throughout the novel, the titles of each section are almost riddles. In order to understand how the titles relate to the story, it helps to know that the literal meaning of the titles may be related to a second, figurative meaning as well.  A second strategy for unlocking the meaning of titles is to observe the narrator’s tone.  You will work in pairs to determine the figurative meaning of titles from the book thus far.

6 Sample  Name of title: Welcome to Merryweather High  Literal meaning: This is the name of the high school.  Figurative meaning: Merryweather is not very merry. It is just the opposite; Melinda is not happy there, also the weather is not clear and sunny by full of dark clouds and unhappiness for her. Challenge/TAG options  Narrator’s Tone: When she says welcome, she means the opposite because no one welcomes her. She calls herself an outcast. Saying the opposite of what is meant is to say it with irony.  Significance of the title: The author uses irony and figurative language to make her point that entering high school adds to Melinda’s unhappiness.
