Are Booster Vaccinations for Hepatitis A Necessary? Data show that one hepatitis A vaccination (HAV) provides long-term (>10 yr) protection against the virus and induces even longer-term (12-25 yr) immune memory in healthy adults. In healthy children, long-term protection is provided up to 6 years, with immune memory lasting up to 14 years. These findings question the need for a booster vaccination. A 2002 study by a panel of international experts concluded that there is no direct evidence to support the need for booster vaccinations.
