The OCONUS IDP Network Upgrade & Optimization Project Presented by Scott Denton National Weather Service 2015 OCONUS Technical Interchange Meeting May 12-15, 2015

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 2 Communications Network Upgrades The NWS is undertaking a major project to upgrade its networks and optimize the communications infrastructure to resolve weaknesses and gaps. The OCONUS Network Upgrade & Optimization Project: Designed to increase bandwidth to ensure the NWS’s terrestrial telecommunication infrastructure supports the delivery of critical weather data to internal and external stakeholders. A near-term network upgrade will bring increased bandwidth and “Trusted Internet Connections and Access Providers” (TICAP) compliance for NWS field sites throughout Alaska and Pacific Regions. The main focus is on fixing and maintaining NWS operational networks and delivering short-to-medium term capability and reliability upgrades and improvements. It will also address network single point of failure vulnerabilities.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 3 NCEP OCONUS – Alaska Region

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) NCEP OCONUS: Alaska Region Service Providers: ‒CenturyLink ‒ACS ‒MTA (sub to ACS) ‒Wire Comm (sub to ACS) Who will manage the Network: ‒NCEP Staff (College Park, ARH and PRH) ‒CenturyLink ‒ACS Bandwidth Limitation: ‒Dynamic to meet data needs 4

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) NCEP OCONUS: Alaska Region (Cont.) Connections and Routing ‒Any to Any within State ‒QOS within State ‒Redundant and diverse wherever possible »Diverse fiber paths into the building »Redundant and diverse paths between offices and telco CO’s »Redundant and diverse paths between Cities »Diverse paths between Alaska and long haul to CONUS NCEP Network »Alternate technology where fiber diversity is not possible ‒Connecting to OPSnet through NCEP ‒Internet access through TICAP via NCEP 5

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) 6 NCEP OCONUS: Pacific Region

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) NCEP OCONUS: Pacific Region Service Providers: ‒CenturyLink ‒Hawaiian Telecom ‒GTA (sub to CenturyLink) ‒ASTCA (Am. Sam. Telecom) ‒O3b Networks (Sat Comm to Am. Sam.) Who will manage the Network: ‒NCEP Staff (College Park, PRH and ARH) ‒CenturyLink ‒Hawaiian Telecom Bandwidth Limitation: ‒Dynamic to meet data needs 7
