2. A base word is a word that can stand alone.

3. A prefix is a word part added to the beginning of a base word. For example, in the word retry, try is the base word and re- is the prefix added at the beginning.

4. The spelling of the base word does not change when adding a prefix. Knowing the meaning of a prefix helps you figure out the meaning of the whole word.
