Temperate Forest By: Alex Horn
3
Description A Temperate Forest is a forest that has enough rainfall to grow trees, shrubs, flowers, ferns, and mosses while following the rhythm of the seasons.
4
Locations Temperate forests appear in eastern North America,Northeastern Asia, and western and central Europe.
5
Differences between Spring and Winter Spring time brings new life to the trees and plants, warm temperatures, and rain which helps everything grow Winter months are extremely cold. All the trees loose their leaves.
6
Animal Survival Methods Animals that live in the temperate deciduous forest must be able to adapt to the changing seasons. Some animals in this biome migrate or hibernate in the winter.
7
Example 1 (mammal) The grizzly bear is primarily nocturnal and in the winter puts on up to 400 pounds of fat, becoming very lethargic. Although they are not true hibernators and can be woken easily. They like to den up in a protected spot, such as a cave, crevice or hollow log during the winter months.
8
Example 2 (bird) They Migrate Migratory ospreys are found during the winter through Mexico,Central America, and South America
9
Example 3 (fish) Adult Northern Pike feed largely on other fish as well as frogs, crayfish, mice, muskrats and ducklings
10
Plant Survival Methods Plants become dormant. They loose their leaves and seal the places where leaves were attached with a protective covering called a leaf scar.
11
Example 4 (reptile) Reptiles spend the winter in underground crevices. They hibernate in there till spring.
12
Why Don’t Evergreens lose their Needles? Because conifers grow at the tips of the branches, the oldest needles are closest to the trunk. That's why they look like they have healthy needles all the time. Evergreens lose less water out of needles than leaves.
