Security and shelter One of the most important aspect of Steeles six functions because it is important to make your students feel at home and welcome Make sure that your students feel safe and secure in your classroom fan, air purifier, “welcome” sign, ladder, clean classroom, plants, pets Protection from bad weather, noise, odors fish air purifier plants

Social Contact • Interaction between students: seats arranged to be accessible for cooperative learning • Arranging desks in clusters • Teacher interaction with students: make eye contact, move through out the room, change seating arrangements periodically Cluster Easily Accessible

Symbolic identification
• Classrooms should be personalized to give students a sense of community with the classroom: pictures of students, name tags, tapestry • Displays and reflects work and the diversity of the students Jobs Students work
