8 State and Local Approaches

9 Option Pathway Student Counselor/instructor identifies student to the Option Pathway: o One (1) year or more behind ninth grade cohort, or o At risk of dropping out of school, or o Age inappropriate according to grade level With approval from parent/guardian, the student takes the TABE and scores: o Recommended to score 8 th grade level in reading o Recommended to score 7 th grade level in math The Option Team, meets to discuss placement of student into the Option Pathway and if they are placed a meeting is held with student and the parent/guardian. Academic, attendance and behavioral expectations are discussed. Student is required to take the WESTEST and other state tests. Student may not be taken out of the participation numbers Student/Team selects the Option goal and CTE Pathway

10 Option 2 Goal Use as credit recovery Designed for high school seniors who have failed a major core course and who are in jeopardy of not meeting the high school graduation requirements with their cohort Receives GED preparation class in the deficient required content area for graduation Passes the content area GED Test by achieving the minimum passing score as determined by the State GED Office Continues attending and maintaining passing grades in all other classes as required by Policy 2510

11 Option 1 Goal Designed for students who have failed major core courses and are in the ninth, tenth, eleventh or twelfth grade - a student in the eleventh or twelfth grade must already be enrolled in and passing a CTE pathway Attends GED Preparation classes and passes the GED Tests as given Completes a 21 st Century Global Skills j job preparation program Completes the four (4) required core courses in a CTE skilled pathway concentration or any program of study resulting in a certification Meets standards on the WorkKeys ® job skills assessment, if applicable

12 Option 3 Goal Designed for the student who is dropping out of school Is encouraged to take the GED Pre- test to see if they are capable of passing the GED Test The student should be encouraged to take the GED Test prior to leaving the public school system This student will be entered in WVEIS as a dropout and then changed to Attained a GED Diploma Coding will not be counted in the graduation rate
