Osteoma of the occipital bone.
5
Identify the abnormality
6
Marked narrowing of the disk spaces from c3/c4 downwards. This is an example of spondylosis.
7
This patient has had a metastasis of breast cancer to the parietal bone. Metastasis to the skull are usually osteolytic.
8
This three year old child has dilated ventricles of the brain. This usually leads to increased intracranial pressure which causes widening of all the sutures.
9
This patient has a air/fluid level in the left maxillary sinus. The fact that this is not bilateral is indicative of an inflammatory event on that side of the face. This patient had a molar removed on the left side 2 weeks prior. He subsequently developed a fistula into the sinus.
10
This film depicts a homogeneous mass in the occipital region super tentorial in position. The most likely cause is a meningioma, a tumor of the meninges.
11
This film depicts ventricles that are somewhat still dilated following the placement of a shunt. There is also a lens shaped calcification in the right parietal region, most likely the remnant of a subdural hematoma. It is not usually possible to distinguish epidural from subdural calcifications on plain film radiographs.
12
This patient was severely beaten and arrived at the hospital comatose. Angiography shows a crescent shape radiolucent mass separating the lateral portion of the brain from the calvaria due to a subdural hematoma.
13
Lateral view Dye has been introduced into the dural sac (myelogram). It shows a defect at the L5-S1 interval on the left, the result of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation. This patient complained of severe low back pain which radiated down the left posterior thigh.
14
This patient had pain in the left arm. The myelogram shows a defect on the left side at the C7-T1 interval. This is a herniation of the intervertebral disc.
15
This patient’s neck was severely flexed in an auto accident. Fracture of the axis through the laminae and pedicles is apparent. The fracture is similar to one by the submental positioning of the hang man’s knot.
