* Write 20 questions that you expect will be answered this semester. -Begin with what you think you know -Generate a few questions about what you do not know and then…… * Watch the Greatest Discoveries with Bill Nye: AstronomyGreatest Discoveries with Bill Nye: Astronomy * As you watch indicate by highlight or star those questions that you knew well * If you do not finish in class, go to YouTube or Nash S-Drive Outbox and watch.

Learning Targets: Determine your knowledge of astronomy Review the expectations and class rules Model the solar system Success Criteria: Ability to list the topics of astronomy Repeat the class rules and expectations Rendering of the solar system Reminder: Astronomy 20 Questions highlighted or starred with the completion of the Bill Nye Great Discoveries video (on YouTube or the Nash S-Drive) Due by Friday, 9/4/15 & Be ready for a quiz about the Discoveries

* Complete the pretest on a scantron * Grade for completion, not the score * Covers the whole semester (not totally inclusive of all that we will do and learn) * Think Semester Final

Syllabus * Read the syllabus * Share with parents * Sign the return form * Bring the signed form tomorrow * Syllabus Quiz tomorrow

Create a scale model of the solar system: (due today) - Use blank paper and pencil (colored pencils if you choose) - Draw the relative sizes of the planet (label with the names) - Draw the relative size of the sun - Draw a star to represent Alpha Centauri the star closest to our solar system (What do you know about this so-called star)? - Place the objects in their relative locations to scale - Draw your scale model and indicate the distance between each object and the diameter of each object in millimeters (obtain rulers)

* On an index card, create a postcard that would be sent to you from some other location in the universe (Earth or elsewhere – use your imagination * Use Figure 1.1 Cosmic Address on page 3 * Begin with your name and choose a favorite location, (maybe a favorite vacation spot). * Begin with your name and address and end with the most general (largest area) as shown in the figure for the universe * You should have 8 lines altogether * Draw a picture of the location of origin on the opposite side

Submit * Textbook Survey (not done? Take your text home and finish over the weekend and submit on Tuesday), but otherwise APPROVE and check, correct and score using the key. Practice Reading the Textbook 1. Read the Learning Goals on Page 1 2. Study all 17 figures & read the captions 3. Scan the chapter pages 2-21 by doing the following: a. Read the section titles b. Read the subsection questions c. Read Think About It, See It For Yourself, Common Misconceptions d. Note the special sections: Vocabulary, Mathematical Insights and Special Topic to determine their main point(s) e. Read the Big Picture and Summary of Key Concepts pages 21 -22 4. Now read the chapter straight through pages 2-21. 5. Continue this process tomorrow Silent Work the rest of the Period!!
