First aid for choking ASK if he/she can talk. If a victim can still speak or cough, some air is getting through. Allow him/her to cough up the object. NEVER pound a person on the back to force it out. That could force the object further down and completely block the wind pipe.

First Aid for Respiratory Failure Choking is only one reason people stop breathing. Heart attack, drowning, electrical shock, or a severe allergic reaction can cause people to stop breathing (respiratory failure). This person will have pale or blue skin, especially around the mouth or fingers.
