What are our strengths? Headteacher, Leadership Team, Governors and Staff ALL know where the school is currently and what needs to be done to improve. There was nothing we didn’t know already. We have already eradicated the weakest teaching. We have plans already in place to improve further. We want to be outstanding.
5
What are our strengths? Behaviour of the children Children are keen to learn and have a positive attitude.
6
What are our strengths? EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) Although starting below national expected, the children are making good progress.
7
What are our strengths? Phonics Year 1 phonics check ‘test’ has been in place for 2 years. The majority of children this year are expected to reach the expected standard.
8
What are our strengths? Attendance This was one of the major action points from the last inspection where we were well below the national average. We are now above average.
9
What are our strengths? Governors They have a clearer understanding in their role. More involved in checking the school themselves.
10
What are our challenges? Pupil Achievement is not yet ‘good’ Recent improvement in teaching have not had sufficient time to speed up progress. Children’s attainment and progress have not increased enough compared with the raised expectation. What we are doing? Continuing with the recent improvements in the quality of teaching. Recent observations (with Primary Advisor) has 85% of teaching being Good or Outstanding. In September we are on track for 100% Making sure that high quality teaching is consistent across the school.
11
What are our challenges? Progress in Mathematics is slower than Reading and Writing We have already focused on Reading and Writing – with great results. Already planned focus on Mathematics from January 2014 – but has not had time to impact on standards. What we are doing? LA & Ofsted are happy with the plans that are in place. Devon Mathematics advisors been into school regularly for a number of years improving the teaching of mathematics. New Mathematics Curriculum (Sept 2014) already introduced with new expectations for different year groups. Already planning parental workshops to share this information.
12
What are our challenges? Pupil Achievement at the end of the Spring Term Yr6 2 levels progress94% in Reading (88% in 2013) 94% in Writing (91% in 2013) 91% in Mathematics(88% in 2013) 3 levels progress63% in Reading(30% in 2013) 43% in Writing(30% in 2013) 34% in Mathematics(31% in 2013) L4+ in Reading, Writing, Mathematics – 76%(R-86%, W-83% M-85%) Reading, Writing AND Mathematics – 63% (75% in 2013)
13
What are our challenges? Until recently, Year 1 pupils have not developed their skills in phonics. Year 1 phonic screen check been in place for 2 years What we are doing? Continuing with the recent improvements in the quality of teaching of phonics. We are on track to meet the National Expectation in the phonics screen check. Considering the ‘below’ starting point entering Foundation Stage, this is good progress. Parental workshops are planned this term to share how we teach phonics so that we can help the children together.
14
What are our challenges? Teachers have not used the information about how well pupils are doing to set work for pupils at the right level of difficulty. What we are doing? We need to challenge the children more. Developing further ‘guided groups’ – working with smaller groups within the lesson. Better understanding of data so that we can target groups of children at their level.
15
What are our challenges? Marking in pupils’ books does not let them know how they can improve. What we are doing? Finding time to discuss with children what they need to do to improve, as well as planning opportunities for them to put the improvements into practice. Finding ways of sharing the improvements needed with parents so that we can work together to improve children’s outcomes.
16
What are our challenges? In the past, leaders, including governors, have not responded quickly enough to falling standards. In the past we have not kept up with the higher standards now expected of us and our children. What we are doing? Monitoring the quality of teaching rigorously. Analysing the data regularly. Challenging the teachers to raise achievement for our children.
17
What are our challenges? Leaders do not check the impact of teaching rigorously enough on how different groups of pupils learn. We have to be more thorough in spotting any weaknesses in different groups of children – Special Needs, EAL (English as a foreign language), Pupil Premium, more able, boys/girls, etc. What we are doing? We have Consistent assessment procedures for all the different groups listed above, and through Pupil Progress meetings and Leadership meetings, we don’t let ANY child slip through the net.
18
What are our challenges? Involving parents in their children’s learning. Although we are now ahead of a lot of schools in the changes we have made to your children’s learning, we now need to share these with you. What we are doing? Planned parental workshops in sharing how we teach, especially in Phonics, Reading, Writing and Mathematics. More interim reports sharing children’s progress. Events for parents to be involved with in school, for example: class assemblies, sharing children’s best work, etc. Developing the house system.
19
Summary Improve the quality of teaching so that it is good or better. Increasing the effectiveness of leadership and management.
