2 About Me My name is Jamie Fries. I am a freshman from Davenport, Iowa. I am planning on double majoring in international relations and leisure and sports management. I also hope to have a minor in Italian. I enjoy traveling, art, sports, and being with people. My English 110 Professor is Michelle Trim, and my project is titled “Body Image” (creative, I know). 3 Project Description My paper entitled “Body Image” is an imitation of “Chief Seattle’s Letter to President Pierce, 1855.” I chose to write my imitation on how the struggle to have a perfect body affects women in this day and age. My project touches on different reasons for why women feel pressured to have a certain appearance, and how this hinders their lives. Many women strive to look like the models they see in magazines, and in trying to achieve this look, they put their bodies at risk. My paper explores why I think women try so hard when it comes to their appearance, and what they feel as they try to reach this “perfect” body type. My paper also touches on why women should not go through the emotional and sometimes physical strain in order to have this ideal body type. It reassures them that they are fine exactly how they are, and tells that the best thing in life is to love, so it does not matter whether they are a few pounds heavier or have a bad hair day. At the end of the day, the people that truly love them will not care about those trivial things at all, they truly just care about the person inside. 4 Writing Process The first step I took in writing this paper was to read “Chief Seattle’s Letter to President Pierce, 1855.” I was required to pay attention to the style, voice, and rhetorical approach of this letter, and I could write my paper on any topic of my choice. I spent some time trying to think of topics, and decided to write about body image because it is interesting to me, and I know it affects many women my age. I had to spend a lot of time making sure I was writing this essay in the correct style, and I finally finished my rough draft, which is drastically different from my final draft. I then took this draft in for peer review, and I received many helpful comments from the members of my groups. I revised my paper, adding a few topics that they had suggested, and then turned it into my professor for her review. When I received her comments back, I finally turned my paper into the final draft it is today. My main inspiration for writing this paper was because of all of my friends who do suffer from having a bad body image. Many college age students are affect by this problem, and I used my experience with them to inspire the different topics I touched on. 5 What I Have Learned From this project, I learned that I could successfully write in a different style. Before this, I thought my way was the only way, but I am extremely pleased with this paper. I now realize that using other people’s work as an example can be helpful in improving my own style and helping my way of writing become more successful. I have also learned that peer revision is an excellent tool. It never helped me very much in high school because no one took it seriously, but my group helped me think of ways to greatly improve my paper in order to make it the best it could be. These lessons are going to help me become a much better writer in the future, and they will help me to utilize different aspects of the writing process that will help to make my final product a fantastic one. 6 I believe that this project helped me develop an appreciation for the capacity of writing to change oneself and the world. This paper has a very strong viewpoint on how body image can affect a person’s world, and how having a good view of oneself leads to a more fulfilling life. Many women struggle with body image issues, and sometimes, just hearing that they do not need to be perfect is enough to help them. I have a friend who is an English major, and I made her proof read my paper. My friend suffers from body image issues, and after reading my paper, she asked for a copy of it. She said that it helped her realize that she does not need to be so concerned with her body because in the long run it does not matter at all. For many people, it just takes a little reminder to help get them back on the right track. The fact that something as simple as this paper could help change someone never hit me until my friend read it. With that, I realized that writing really does have the ability to help change the world. I started to think of the many books and articles that have helped change my life, and discovered that my English 110 assignment has the possibility to help change the world.
