The federal TRIO programs are educational opportunity The federal TRIO programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. At Hillsborough Community College, TRIO includes three outreach and support programs targeted to serve and assist low-income, first generation college students as they progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to earning a baccalaureate degree. TRIO programs focus on supplying tutorial and support services to students who are identified as early as middle school, and similar services are available in high school and at the college level. outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. A primary goal is to ensure that students remain in the academic mainstream thereby encouraging retention and ultimately graduation. Therefore, even though TRIO services are available at the middle school level, one of the main goals of College Reach-Out and Talent Search programs is to encourage students to graduate from high school and continue on to a post-secondary institution. Student Support Services' principal concern is to help students stay in college until they earn a baccalaureate degree. Additionally, TRIO programs provide the tools to move individuals along the path to economic independence. All of these programs serve to improve higher education and make the academic experience more reflective of the larger society.
